About Us

Who?

Gitplanet.com is created by a team of open source lovers from various backgrounds. We have extensive experience in research, entrepreneurship, data management, data analysis and web design.

Why?

In 2019, a group of top researchers from the University of Tennessee and Carnegie Mellon University published a paper on an infrastructure prototype called The World of Code (WoC). WoC is created to mine the Open Source Version Control Software Data. In its latest numbers, WoC has identified over 140 million distinct open source repositories, with billions of commit histories.

Open source projects are growing at a very rapid rate. Popular distributed version control and source code management systems such as github.com, bitbucket.com have done a great job in managing the projects. However, methods to discover these projects are usually relied on google search or word of mouth.

To better categorize existing open source projects, and to assist users to discover the open projects they need, we created gitplanet.com. Desmond Tutu once wisely said that “there is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.” We are taking tiny steps to solve the problem of open source project discovery, but we are certain our efforts will not be in vain.
