a growing guide to plants at home

house-plants

A growing collection of plants at home. Meant to be a record of watering and preferred sunlight instructions.

Calamondin Tree (Lily 🍋)

appearance description
calamondin water: wait until 1.5cm of soil is dry before watering

sun: as much direct sunlight as possible. In the summer, take outside on the brighter side of the room.

care tips: fertilize in the winter half strength water soluble fertilizer every 5 weeks

pets: a-ok for pets!

Alocasia (Elephant Ear 🐘)

appearance description
alocasia water: wait until 2-3cm of soil is dry before watering. Likes a lot of humidity, so spray with water often in the summer.

sun: very bright indirect light to grow nice and strong

care tips: fertilize every two weeks in the summer for better growth

pets: keep away from cats!

Asparagus Fern

appearance description
asparagus fern water: likes a very humid environment so keep spraying it with water. keep the soil moist.

sun: light is good, but not too much. If it's really happy will give berries that can be planted as new plant.

care tips: fertilize every few weeks

pets: no good for cats

Philodendron Squamiferum

appearance description
philodendron water: wait until 50% of soil is dry before watering

sun: no direct sun, but does not mind a sunny side of the room

care tips: only repot if roots are coming out of the inner container. Always keep it in a plastic cotainer rather than just the one pot. If leaves are yellow, this means it's overwatered

pets: keep away from pets since it's poisonous to them

Philondendron Hastatum (Silver Sword 🗡️)

appearance description
philondendron hastatum water: wait until 50% of soil is dry before watering again. If the leaves become yellow it's overwatered; brown - under watered.

sun: medium to high light, but not direct. Can do in low light, just doesn't grow as fast

care tips: don't repot until absolutely necessary, the soil needs to drain well. Likes to climb, so once it grows up, add a few sticks to help it grow.

pets: no good to cats.

Pilea Peperomioides

appearance description
pilea peperomioides water: water when the soil is mostly quite dry

sun: lots of indirect sunlight

care tips: needs a pot with good drainage. Leaves can also give roots if cut and put into water.

pets: non-toxic to pets!

Calathea Musaica, the network plant 📡

appearance description
calathea musaica water: this plant likes water and likes being moist. As soon as the top level dries up, water again. Lots and lots of spraying. Probably everyday or every other day is good. Unless it's in the room with humidifier.

sun: Only indirect sunlight. Bright light will make the little network marking disappear.

care tips: this plant seems to grow quite quickly in this location, so it will need to be repotted. Best way to repot is to separate its little leaves out. Will need a well draining soil type for next time.

pets: non-toxic to cats. Chashu does like to hunt it though.

Silver Pothos, Trebie variation

appearance description
silver pothos water: water regularly, but don't let the roots rot. It will survive a few days without water also

sun: Average amount of light. Bright sunlight destroys the plant, and too little sunlight doesn't let it grow its vines.

care tips: likes humidity (spraying with water is good). Repotting should happen when the the plant stops growing, or when roots are coming out of the bottom of the inner pot.

pets: toxic to pets, need to keep away.

Ficus Elastica, Rubber plant

appearance description
ficus-elastica water: Water once 1cm of top soil is dry.

sun: bright spot, but no direct sunlight.

care tips: These plants like to **grow**. Can end up 3m high. They don't like the suddent drop of temperature, so it's best to keep it in the same spot. Renew soil every year once the plant has matured.

pets: toxic to cats if they keep eating it.

Hoya Linearis, the good hair plant 💁

appearance description
hoya linearis water: keep the soil moist, but not overwatered. It's good to keep it in its original pot with the draining tray. Spraying the leafs every so often is okay!

sun: sunlight is good! but not the super hot one in the summer.

care tips: if it flowers, leave the stalk after the flowers fade since that's where next flowers will come.

pets: can't find anywhere that says it's toxic to pets, so should be good!

Begonia Maculata Wightii ( ⚬ Polka Dot ⚬ )

appearance description
begonia maculata wightii water: Begonias are sensitive to overwatering. It's best to wait for the next time to water until soil is 1cm dry. Instead spray leaves with water.

sun: bright indirect sunlight spot is the best, especially for its flowers.

care tips: Don't feed more than one a month in the summer. They like a bit, but not too much.

pets: Toxic to cats. The leaves not so much, it's the soil that's rather bad for them.

Prayer Plant 🙏, Maranta

appearance description
prayer plant water: In the summer water enough so the soil never dries out. Spraying leafs is okay, just don't let the leaves gather too much water so they don't rot.

sun: in the summer keep away from direct sunlight, but during the Berlin Winter, need to keep closer to windows/sun.

care tips: fertilizing is good during the summer, but cutting down to once a month in winter

pets: totally okay for pets

Aucuba Japonica (Gold Dust)

appearance description
aucuba japonica water: Water regularly, i.e. let the top soil dry up before watering. This plant prefers cold water, rather than slightly warm version.

sun: This plant prefers shade. If it's getting too much sun, the leaves start turning brown.

care tips: This is actually a shrub, so eventually will have to repot to a much bigger container.

pets: Toxic to cats!

Monstera 👻

appearance description
monstera water: pot needs to be well draining since it needs a big pot and you don't want to rot the roots. Spraying leaves is really good for it, and even ocasstional showers in the bathtub.

sun: Light, but not direct light.

care tips: The little brown roots that come out where leaves are at are the way these plants propagate. [The guide on doing that](https://leafandpaw.com/2018/02/19/how-to-propagate-monstera-deliciosa/) is really useful when you want new monsteras

pets: TOXIC, don't let pets eat this!

Parlor Palm 🌴

appearance description
parlor palm water: Don't need too much water, especially true in the winter. Misting is okay.

sun: Don't like too much light. If the leaves start too looked burnt, it's time to put it in a darker spot. Definitely no direct sunlight.

care tips: Feed them some fertilizer a few times a month -- its roots are not very strong, so need a bit of help.

pets: not toxic to cats. They keep munching on it whenever it's in reach, so probably put a bit further away.
